How much sperm is needed to get pregnant?
It only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg to get pregnant. However, keep in mind that for every sperm that makes it to the egg, there are millions of other sperm that don’t.
On average, each time a man ejaculates, a man releases nearly 100 million sperm. Why are so many sperms released if only one sperm is needed to get pregnant? Because in order to meet the waiting egg, semen must travel from the vagina to the fallopian tubes, an arduous journey in which very few sperm survive.
Experts believe the process could be a way of natural sperm selection – only the strongest sperm can come to fertilize an egg. This gives the best chance for a healthy baby.
For sperm that do meet the egg, entry into the egg (covered by a thick layer) is not certain.
How to improve sperm health?
There are many things you can do to promote general well-being and, in turn, improve sperm health as well. Try some of these tips:
Do not smoke or use illegal drugs, especially anabolic steroids.
Avoid exposure to toxins such as pesticides and heavy metals.
– Limiting alcohol intake.
Have a healthy diet and control your weight.
Wear breathable underwear, not too tight, because heat slows down sperm production.
