The waitress with a “ruined” past still makes Europe’s most famous Crown Prince against the whole world
As a rule of thumb, the life partner of any Crown Prince must be chosen strictly as it affects the reputation and prosperity of a royal family. However, the Crown Prince of Norway, the most handsome single royal member in Europe at that time, broke that traditional rule, creating a more beautiful story than his own fairy tale.
The bride “breaks” all standards
More than 20 years ago, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway shocked the media and public when he announced his marriage to a waitress who had an “unclean” past. In 2000, the Crown Prince of Norway announced his engagement to a commoner named Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby. Immediately, this 28-year-old girl’s “biographical background” was exposed in the newspaper and the information obtained made the people surprised and amazed.
At that time, Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby was a single mother, she used to work as a waitress and even attended drug parties. She has a 4-year-old son with a man who was convicted of violence, drunk driving and drug possession. Not hiding in the media, the single mother admitted that she used to lead a lethargic lifestyle after her parents’ marriage broke up, the father then married a girl who used to be a stripper.
According to local media, Mette-Marit first met the Crown Prince at Quart – Norway’s largest music festival, through a mutual friend. A few years later, the two developed a love relationship and moved in together in an apartment in Oslo. The crown prince became the first European royal to live with his girlfriend before the two were officially married. This move was heavily criticized by conservatives and the church.
While most people are against this marriage, Crown Prince Haakon’s parents are very supportive. In the past, it took his father, King Harald, 9 years to convince his grandfather (King Olav V) to allow him to marry Sonja Haraldsen – a commoner. A few days before the wedding, in a press conference, the future Princess of Norway publicly apologized for the “wrong past”.
She said: “It was an experience that cost me dearly and took a long time to get over. I can’t change the past, even though I wish I could“.
Crown Prince Haakon said after his fiancée’s confession: “No wonder I fell in love with this girl. What we found in each other is so strong that I can’t give it up“, the Crown Prince announced as he sat next to Mette-Marit.
Norwegian media were quick to praise her bravery for admitting mistakes with long dark slips. In a poll conducted by the Verdens Gang following the confession, 70% said that Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoiby is suitable to be the future Queen of Norway.
Spectacular makeover
After the sweet royal wedding, Princess Mette-Marit tried to continue her education and take courses from various institutions to be worthy of her role as the Prince’s life partner. She studied ethics courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Oslo, courses at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, where she focuses on issues related to HIV/AIDS. Princess Mette-Marit then obtained her master’s degree in 2012.
In 2006, the Princess of Norway became a special representative of UNAIDS (United Nations Joint Program on HIV/AIDS). The World Economic Forum (WEF) named her a Young Global Leader in 2010. Håkon Kavli, a political scientist in Norway, said:Since her marriage, she has fulfilled all her official duties to the liking of most Norwegians.“.
Scientist Kavli also revealed that a poll showed that more than a third of Norwegians think the Duchess is a good role model for young people. After marriage, Crown Prince Haakon also trained with the Norwegian Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic program in 2001, earning a master’s degree in Development Studies from the London School of Economics.
The two of them went hand in hand to build a solid home.
In 2004, the royal couple welcomed their first daughter – Princess Ingrid Alexandra. Their son, Prince Sverre Magnus, was born in 2005. Crown Prince Haakon is the stepfather of Marius Borg Høiby, the Duchess’ stepson. Marius did not inherit the throne, but his stepfather recognized him as a member of the royal family. It can be seen that Crown Prince Haakon and his commoner wife have always tried their best for each other, creating an inseparable unity.
Now, after more than 20 years of being together, the couple is still passionate, walking side by side on royal duties and long trips. It can be said that, no one can live forever in the past, it is important to always know how to overcome all difficulties to perfect, become the best “version” in the future. Princess Mette-Marit is a prime example of this, inspiring millions of others around the world.

Happy family of couple.
