Vuong Vu – ‘king of martial arts’ with love

Vuong Vu’s first wife was Lam Thuy (1936-1995) – a Hong Kong movie star in the 1950s-1960s. The two knew each other while filming the same movie, at that time Lam Thuy was married to director Tan Kiem, had a son. The marriage between Lam Thuy – Tan Kiem is not happy because the director loves gambling, losses lead to bankruptcy, he has to sell his house to pay debts.

After Vuong Vu’s death, director Ang Ang said: “For many movie fans like me, Mr. Vuong Vu represents the cinematic atmosphere of an era. Remember his movies, remember his heroic spirit.” According to Ang Lee, Vuong Vu not only built the standard of a martial arts superstar but was also a pioneer in the box office genre. Wang Yu’s works influenced Ang Lee as well as many Western filmmakers. Director Quentin Tarantino once said that Vuong Vu is one of the most representative and creative directors of the martial arts genre.

On April 5, on Weibo, Jackie Chan remembered Vuong Vu: “I heard that he passed away in Qingming class, another martial arts master passed away. The film industry will remember his dedication to boxing films. Miss him. May you rest in peace.”
