Par3 Contest is initiated by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones – two co-founders of Augusta National as well as Masters. When building the main course in the early 1930s, architect Alister MacKenzie also included a practice court for putting greens and finishing holes. But the category was unfinished due to lack of money and Jones’ lack of determination. In the late 1950s, Roberts rebooted the old idea. He thinks the par3 course could become a “hot spot” ahead of the main round of Masters week. And like that, the work was quickly completed for the Par3 Contest to debut at the Masters in 1960.
