Roma lost at the last minute in the European Cup

NorwayJose Mourinho’s team lost again at the Bodo/Glimt field with a 1-2 result in the first leg of the Europa Conference League quarter-finals on the evening of April 7.

Bodo/Glimt continues to show that they are Roma’s nemesis in this season’s Europa Conference League. In the group stage, the Norwegian club once made Mourinho receive the heaviest defeat in his career in the European Cup with 1-6. In the second leg at home, Roma needed a late goal from defender Roger Ibanez to draw Bodo/Glimt 2-2.

During the first leg quarterfinal press conference, Mourinho emphasizes that Roma has matured and is no longer the club that lost at the Bodo/Glimt stadium late last year. In fact, Roma played better, advancing at the end of the first half, but still received defeat because of mistakes in the defense in the second half. However, the Italian capital club still has the second leg at home Olimpico after a week to correct the mistake.

Yesterday, both had changes compared to the confrontation nearly half a year ago. Bodo/Glimt suffered a big loss when the main striker Ola Solbakken was absent – who scored three out of eight goals against the Giallorossi this season – because of the flu. Meanwhile, Roma are without the services of Nicole Zaniolo and Leonardo Spinazzola because of injuries.

In the stands, Bodo/Glimt fans held up banners and chanted repeatedly to remind Mourinho’s army of the defeat in the group stage. Under the field, the homeowner entered the game jubilantly and continuously created waves towards the goal of Rui Patricio. In the 13th minute, Ulrik Saltnes’ shot in the penalty area touched Gianluca Mancini and went into the net. Three minutes later, Bodo/Glimt missed another delicious opportunity. Hugo Vetlesen had a situation where he was half-passed and half-kick to cut the ball across the goal, but Runar Espejord came in slowly and couldn’t finish.

Roma improved the game from the second half of the first half. The first opportunity came in the 30th minute, when 20-year-old Polish striker Nicola Zalewski missed the post in the penalty area. A few minutes later, it’s your turn Tammy Abraham missed a delicious opportunity when he could not beat goalkeeper Nikita Haikin in the face-to-face position. The England striker then kicked the ball but continued to be intercepted by defender Alfons Sampsted.

Roma’s pressure paid off at 43. Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave a one-touch pass for captain Lorenzo Pellegrini to penetrate the box and hit the roof of Bodo/Glimt’s net. Pellegrini scored his 12th goal in all competitions this season, topping the individual record of 11 goals set last season.

However, Roma’s ambitions for revenge collapsed in the second half because of mistakes in the defense. In the 56th minute, left-back Brice Wembangomo finished from outside the box. The ball lightly touched Ulrik Saltnes, but it was not dangerous and it was in Patricio’s position. However, the 34-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper missed and dropped the ball into the goal. Goals are counted for Saltnes. This is Bodo/Glimt’s second shot on target from the start.

Then, in turn, Marash Kumbulla and Pellegrini put the ball into the net in the 72nd and 76th minutes, but both were denied by offside. Two minutes later, Abraham was not in an offside position, but was unsteady when he finished and the ball went wide of the post.

squandered opportunity, Rome pay a heavy price. When the official time was 70 seconds left, Amahl Pellegrino took a free kick to let Hugo Vetlesen cut his head and hit Matias Vina, leaving Patricio staring at the ball into the net. According to Football Italy, it was Vina who made a silly mistake, causing Roma to suffer a penalty. The Uruguay defender had the opportunity to score atonement, but headed over the bar from Bryan Cristante’s cross in the last minute of injury time.

Before thinking about the comeback in the second leg, Roma will take on Salernitana in the 32nd round of Serie A on April 10. Mourinho’s teachers and students are competing for tickets to the Champions League next season, when they are five points behind Juventus – the fourth-placed team.
