8-month-old baby has scaly skin and fluid discharge because parents self-treat eczema

Recently, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital has received many cases of children with atopic dermatitis coming to the examination, including many cases of atopic dermatitis superinfected.

For example, an 8-month-old girl living in Binh Phuoc was brought to the clinic by her mother with swollen face, hands and feet, fluid discharge, crusted secretions, itching, and crying a lot. Her mother said that since 3 months old, her cheeks had red patches, then spread to her hands and feet, dry, itchy skin, so she often scratched.

Due to fear of the epidemic, thinking that the skin disease was simple, the family self-treated but the condition did not improve. Recently, the skin disease got worse, the baby was crying, eating and sleeping poorly, so the family took it to the doctor.

In another case, a 4-month-old boy living in District 12 was examined by his family with many red papuls appearing on his face, hands, feet, and body, itching, crying, poor sleep. , weight loss … due to fear of health, the family took the baby to the Hospital of Dermatology in Ho Chi Minh City for examination and was appointed by the doctor to be hospitalized.

Atopic dermatitis is one of the common skin diseases in children, many people often call eczema in children. Manifestations of atopic dermatitis are blisters that grow in clusters located on an erythematous background and are very itchy, making children uncomfortable and crying.

Depending on the age of the disease, there will be different symptoms and locations of lesions. In infants, common skin lesions are blisters on the cheeks, forehead, face, if more severe can spread all over the body.

In older children, lesions are common on the wrists, ankles, hands, feet, elbows, and feet, and the baby is very itchy. There are some cases when the children get sick when they grow up, but there are also cases where they have to live with the disease for the rest of their lives.

“Itching is a prominent symptom of atopic dermatitis, seriously affecting the quality of life, causing sleep disturbances, anorexia, thereby adversely affecting the development and growth of children. Besides, a lot of itching will stimulate the child to scratch, causing the child’s skin to be scratched, bleeding, creating conditions for bacteria to penetrate, causing atopic dermatitis superinfection. In cases of severe skin infection, children can have sores, foul pus or even a very dangerous blood infection complication,” said Doctor Doan Phuong.

A number of factors increase the state of atopic dermatitis superinfected in children with atopic dermatitis such as: children scratching, rubbing the diseased skin makes the skin inflammation worse, prone to infection; Parents who do not take care of their skin properly, bathing/applying leaves, buying topical medicines for their children can make their children’s skin diseases worse, persistent and recurrent many times; Overuse of antibiotics increases the risk of antibiotic resistance.

All subjects can have atopic dermatitis superinfection. However, according to statistics, the incidence of children with the disease is often much higher than that of adults. Because children are subjects with incomplete skin barrier, immature immune system and weak resistance. Therefore, children are very susceptible to attack by bacteria.

As soon as they notice the signs that the baby has atopic dermatitis, parents need to have timely treatment, to avoid the disease progressing worse. Note how to properly care for your baby’s skin every day, to avoid scratching the skin. Do not use skin care products with a lot of foam, containing chemical ingredients because they can irritate baby’s skin. Do not arbitrarily buy topical drugs or abuse folk leaves to bathe your baby.

According to statistics, every year, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital receives nearly 63,000 patients for examination and treatment of atopic dermatitis (leading in skin diseases at the hospital). “Atopic dermatitis in children, if not treated in time, can lead to infections, skin sores, dark spots, permanent scars, cosmetic effects later. Therefore, when the child has symptoms of the disease, the family should immediately take the baby to a hospital specializing in dermatology to be examined and treated according to the appropriate regimen, to prevent the disease from getting worse, and to avoid Unfortunate complications can result from self-treatment.” Doctor Doan Phuong recommended.
