“Basically dare not”

The Forbidden City or Imperial Palace in Beijing is the palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China, with a history of nearly 600 years. Experiencing many changes of the times, wars and natural disasters, but until now, the Forbidden City is still one of the largest and best preserved wooden structures in the world.

There are countless precious treasures in the deep well of the Forbidden City, why hasn't anyone picked them up for hundreds of years? Experts explain:

The Forbidden City is the pride of the Chinese people

During these 600 years, according to historical records, the palace has experienced more than 100 major fires, but it has stood the test of time. One of the contributing factors to this is the system of 72 wells spread throughout the palace.

The task of the 72 wells of the Forbidden City is mainly to put out the fire, not to provide water for daily life and food for the people in the palace. The reason given is because the water is not clean enough. During the feudal period, water for the daily use of both kings, concubines and servants in the palace was imported from a mountain stream on the outskirts of Beijing.

Buried at the bottom of the deep well of the Forbidden City are many stories of ups and downs of its 600-year history. For a long time, it has been rumored that deep down there are many treasures, precious treasures thrown down by many people. It could be concubines, it could be eunuchs, palace maids or any bodyguard. There are too many reasons for this action, it may be that they want to dispose of stolen items, or hide their possessions, or sometimes drop them.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, when the Eight Powers Alliance attacked Beijing, many sources said that Empress Dowager Cixi had people throw a lot of treasures that were inconvenient to carry down the ancient well in the Forbidden City.

There are countless precious treasures in the deep well of the Forbidden City, why hasn't anyone picked them up for hundreds of years? Experts explain:

The ancient well in the palace is a very convenient place to hide things

This information was corroborated when in 1995, Chinese archaeologists excavated a well west of the Imperial Palace for research. They have recovered countless cultural relics from the ancient well that are valuable not only in terms of material but more importantly, historical value.

This is not an isolated case, over the years countless cultural relics have been extracted from the ancient wells, so it can be inferred that there are many cultural relics in the ancient wells of the Forbidden City.

However, experts can only pick up treasures in a certain amount and do not continue this work even though they know that there is still a huge treasure below. That’s why many people wonder that there are countless treasures in the well of the Forbidden City, why not pick them all up? In the old days, no one could pull things out of the well because of danger, but in this day and age, we have machines to help us, so it must be a lot easier.

To answer this question, Chinese experts said that the reason they did not proceed to pick up treasures from the wells of the Forbidden City was simply because… did not dare.

There are countless precious treasures in the deep well of the Forbidden City, why hasn't anyone picked them up for hundreds of years? Experts explain:

The Chinese government has agreed not to salvage objects from the well in the Forbidden City

The wells in the Forbidden City are specially designed with very small wells. In recent times, it has also been renovated to become even smaller for safety. Therefore, when using machinery to rescue, it is easy to destroy hundreds of years old relics. And even if they are lifted up, the treasures may not be able to keep their original state because of a long time lying in a deep dark well. So after all, it was decided to preserve intact the ancient wells in the Forbidden City and leave the treasure – historical witness forever where it belongs.
