Bought a ‘made in China’ USB 3.0 connector, the British engineer was dumbfounded when he discovered it was just a ‘blue USB 2.0’

Although USB 3.0 has about 10 times faster data transfer speed than USB 2.0, these terminals look almost the same. Therefore, manufacturers have created a blue insulating part on the connection port so that users can easily identify it.

However, recently a British engineer has been “put into mind” by this detail.

Shared by blogger of Majenko Technologies, an electronics store in the UK, this engineer said he wanted to output video from HDMI. So he went on eBay and did a search, only to find a Chinese merchant selling both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 adapters. He thought that using a USB 2.0 adapter would require video compression, so he decided to buy a 3.0 port.

Colors are often used to distinguish USB 2.0 and 3.0 . ports

A few days later, the item was delivered. Upon inspection, the British engineer was quite reassured to see that the connector had a pleasant blue color, which one would normally expect from a USB 3.0 enabled device. When plugged in to the PC, the information about the USB 3.0 port shows up and everything seems to be working properly. Even the information is still displayed properly even in Linux operating system.

He recorded a video about the product and edited it in Guvcview software. However, when testing the video, it was compressed for some reason in MJPEG format. To be extra careful, he checked with the command to export the connected USB device, and it turned out that it was recognized as USB 2.0.

Immediately, he pulled out the USB port and examined it closely with a microscope. It didn’t take long for the engineer to realize that instead of having 9 pins (5 at the back and 4 at the front) like regular USB 3.0 ports, the device he bought on eBay had only four. In other words, this is a USB 2.0 port, the only difference being a simple blue insulation.

On the left is a USB 3.0 port with 9 pins, on the left is a fake USD 3.0 but only 4 pins, although there is still a blue plastic part.

“Yes, it’s blue”he lamented. “At first glance it looks like it’s USB 3.0, but it doesn’t have any USB 3.0 pins there at all. It’s a plain, boring USB 2 connector that’s blue!”

At the end of the blog, he exclaims with a half-joking sentence: “Just making it green doesn’t make it USB 3.0, friends.”
