Smart #1 – German brand electric car, Chinese technology

The electric crossover is Smart’s first product after a 50% stake in parent company Daimler was acquired by Chinese company Geely.

Geely said, the #1 is about the same size as the Kia Niro EV, Mini Countryman or Renault Megane E-Tech, but the interior space is more spacious. This advantage can be attributed to the design of the side and rear of the car, which is straighter instead of sloping.

The car is 4,270 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, 1,640 mm high and has a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Vehicle weight 1,820 kg. Some of the features of #1 are frameless doors, hidden handles, and a panoramic sunroof.

According to the company, the cabin of the #1 can be compared to the Mercedes E-class. Infotainment system with 12.8-inch screen, the same 9.2-inch information screen for the driver, and 10-inch HUD screen. Especially the 3D interface based on artificial intelligence technology as well as the voice control system. Advanced safety technology such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive smart headlights.

Developed from the concept of the same name, #1 is also Smart’s first electric vehicle to use Geely’s SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform. The car can run for a distance of 440 km with a full charge thanks to the 66 kWh battery pack located on the floor.

Smart #1 is sold with a rear-mounted electric motor, producing 264 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque. Top speed 180 km/h. Customers also have other battery pack options, and the SEA platform can incorporate up to three motors.

The 10-80% charge time takes about 3.5 hours when using the 22 kW AC normal charging port, and will be less than 30 minutes with the 150 kW DC fast charge.

Currently, Smart has not revealed the price of the car, although the production plan will be from the end of this year before starting to deliver to customers from the beginning of 2023. In addition, the electric crossover is not sold in the US, but only in Europe and Asia.
