De Gea: ‘Losing Everton is a disgrace’

The Man Utd goalkeeper found it difficult to swallow the 0-1 defeat at Everton – the club was struggling with the relegation battle – in the 32nd round of the Premier League on the evening of April 9.

“This loss is a disgrace. Honestly, Man Utd have to win this game. We didn’t create many chances, and that’s the big problem.” De Gea talk to BT Sport after the loss at Goodison Park. “Man Utd didn’t have many good chances, and I don’t know what else to say. The team didn’t play well enough, that’s for sure. Now, the chance to break into the top 4 is extremely difficult.”

Against Everton – the team has lost three games in a row and is struggling with the relegation battle, Man Utd lackluster competition. They controlled the ball 68%, launched 12 shots – almost twice as many as Everton, but didn’t have many good chances. Marcus Rashford squandered two significant situations early in the game, and Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t have the first shot on target until the second half of stoppage time. Substitutes, Juan Mata and Anthony Elanga, also failed to impress.

In the 27th minute, Man Utd conceded a goal, when Anthony Gordon hit Harry Maguire and changed direction before the helplessness of goalkeeper De Gea. “We knew Everton would struggle in this match because they just played midweek. But in reality, we had a difficult time. Although tired, Everton played with more desire to win,” De Gea commented. “It’s unacceptable. I’m very sad to lose this match.”

Sharing De Gea’s views, coach Ralf Rangnick said: “We played well in the first 25 minutes, completely in control of the game. But like I said, we didn’t take advantage of this period, especially the on the left wing. Man Utd has many moments that can score.”

“You can see Everton literally collapsing after the Burnley loss, but Man Utd can’t capitalize,” he added. “In the second half, all the Everton players retreated to defence, and we couldn’t break that wall. Looking at the hierarchy right now doesn’t help. The contention, the physicality is Man’s problem. United now, when we can’t win the ball and create chances.”

After the defeat to Everton, Man Utd is still seventh in the Premier League, a position not enough to attend the European Cup next season. On April 16, they received the bottom team Norwich in the 33rd round of the English Premier League.
