Minh Ngoc excellently won a full PhD scholarship and is currently a 2nd year PhD student in the Department of Economics and Marketing at James Cook University.

Currently a 2nd year PhD student in the Faculty of Economics and Marketing, James Cook University (Australia), Minh Ngoc shared about the reason for being attached to Scientific Research (Scientific Research), realizing the benefits of research from a young age. Studying at the University: “This is the fastest way for students to consolidate and expand the knowledge they have learned in the classroom. Instead of mechanically memorizing theoretical knowledge, researchers flexibly apply it to build new theoretical models, explain economic phenomena or answer research questions that are applicable in Practice. In particular, data analysis will help provide reliable empirical evidence to illuminate the theory. Thus, scientific research on the one hand enriches existing theories, on the other hand contributes to solving practical problems.

Graduating from Foreign Trade University with an excellent degree, Minh Ngoc is determined to devote full time to scientific research.

Besides, from personal experience, Ngoc sees evidence that research capacity is extremely important for students who want to apply for a foreign master’s or doctorate scholarship. Research articles published in prestigious scientific journals help your profile stand out from other candidates and facilitate receiving many research scholarship offers from universities. More broadly, scientific research helps to strengthen critical thinking, scientific methodology to approach and solve work and other life problems.

According to Ngoc, the experience between doing scientific research in the field of social sciences in Vietnam or abroad makes no difference because we live in a flat world, knowledge is shared and accessed globally. If yes, then in general, the investment resources for research by universities in Vietnam are still limited compared to universities abroad. For example, students at some universities in Vietnam still do not have an account to access prestigious international scientific journals for free, which causes great obstacles in scientific research for students.

According to Minh Ngoc, in order to achieve high efficiency in research, it is necessary to spend time, creativity, accumulate certain knowledge, not hesitate to be discouraged before difficulties.

Researching science is not an easy job, especially for students who do not have much knowledge and skills. You may encounter difficulties at every stage of the research process, such as how to ask novel and practical research questions, and to access reliable sources of data and scholarly literature. reliability, analytical methods, data processing or scientific writing style. My advice is that students should first equip themselves with good background knowledge, especially applied econometric knowledge and the ability to read and write English.

Then, you need to boldly and actively participate in research groups with teachers and fellows to learn from their valuable experiences. Gradually, you will build personal relationships, immerse yourself in a scientific research community for support and sharing. Although research can seem like a highly independent profession, students need to remember that they are not alone in this journey!

Minh Ngoc also wants to send a few messages to students who have been, are and will be participating in the “path” of scientific research. “Research is not an easy job for students who are still sitting in lecture halls with limited knowledge and experience skills. Especially to have an international standard publication, the posting process is often very time-consuming and sometimes the article has to be “reworked” many times. This is very discouraging and makes you give up, find yourself another path that can see results faster. However, if you have chosen and identified the right motivation to pursue your research, the factor that the students need is “brain” to achieve their goals.

First of all, you should equip yourself with good background knowledge, especially applied econometric knowledge and the ability to read and write English. Then, you need to boldly and actively participate in research groups with teachers and fellows to learn from their valuable experiences. Gradually, you will build personal relationships, immerse yourself in a scientific research community for support and sharing. Ngoc’s intention after completing her doctoral program is to return to Vietnam and contribute a small part of her energy to scientific research in the country.

Ngoc’s current research direction focuses on technology spillover from foreign-invested enterprises (FDI enterprises) to domestic enterprises and the regulatory role of the state in this relationship. This is an issue with important policy implications in the context that developing countries, including Vietnam, always give many incentives to attract foreign direct investment with the desire to promote economic development and create economic opportunities. domestic technology spillover effect.

However, when FDI enterprises penetrate into the domestic market, it can cause a “crowding-out effect” on domestic enterprises, leading to negative consequences such as reduced productivity, reduce production scale, slow change to technology for these enterprises. Therefore, a question arises as to what developing countries should do to promote the positive spillover effects and limit the negative crowding out effects when attracting foreign direct investment.
