Germany has begun to strengthen its bunker system and build up reserves in case of war, the Welt am Sonntag newspaper quoted the German interior minister as saying.
According to Reuters, tensions between Russia and Ukraine have led to a key change in German policy, when Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to increase defense spending and pour more than 100 billion USD into the military.
The German government is looking to upgrade its public shelter systems and will increase spending to protect citizens, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.
“There are currently 599 public shelters in Germany. We will check to see if further upgrades can be made to those systems. But anyway the dismantling work has stopped,” Ms. Faeser said.
Germany is working on brainstorming new ideas to reinforce underground parking areas, metro stations and basements as possible shelters. In addition, the German government has awarded 88 million euros to the cantons to install new siren systems, and to build stockpiles with essentials such as medical equipment, protective clothing, masks and medicines.
The decision was made by Berlin in the context of Russia’s military campaign continuing in Ukraine.
