Sam Elliott Apologizes For Criticism Of ‘Dog Power,’ Jane Campion

“1883” actor Sam Elliott apologized on Sunday for the comment he made about Jane Campion’s popular western film “The Power of the Dog,” said at a promotional event that he was “not very clear about it.”

“I’ve said some things that hurt people, and I feel terrible about it,” Elliott said in a piece. Deadline dashboard event about Paramount + TV series “1883.”

In an interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast that aired last month, Elliott blasted Campion’s film, calling it a “piece of the s—” and disparaging what he described described as “alluding to homosexuality during the duration of … the film.”

He also questioned what a filmmaker from New Zealand would know about the American West, saying the decision to shoot the film in that country had “wrongly rubbed salt on me”.

“The Power of the Dog” stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a retired rancher in 1920s Montana. The film. lead the candidate group for the 94th Academy Awards, with 12 nods. Campion Wins Best Director Oscarmaking her the only third woman to earn that award.

Elliott on Sunday publicly apologized to Campion, Cumberbatch and the gay community.

“I would like to apologize to the cast of ‘The Power of the Dog’, all the excellent actors, and especially Benedict Cumberbatch,” Elliott said. “I can only say I’m sorry and so am I. I am.”

“The gay community has been amazing to me throughout my entire career, and I mean my entire career, from before I even started in this town. Friends at all levels and every job description to this day,” he said, according to a Deadline report on the event.

“I apologize for hurting any friends and anyone I hold dear, as well as anyone else with the words I used,” he added.

Elliott’s comments gained attention after his episode “WTF” was released on February 28. Campion called out Elliott’s remarks. “a bit sexist.” Cumberbatch said criticisms such as “very odd.”

NBC News has reached out to representatives for Campion and Cumberbatch for comment on Elliott’s apology.

Elliott on Sunday joked about what he’s learned from the experience: “Don’t do a podcast with letters called WTF.”
