The quality of sleep is much more important than the number of hours of sleep

Although many scientists claim that people need at least 8 hours of sleep to lead a healthy life, a new study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has shown that the quality of sleep is new. is more important than sleep time.

According to scientists, some “sleepers” are endowed with genes that allow them to need only four or six hours of rest each night. Furthermore, these individuals often exhibit psychological resilience and resistance to various neurodegenerative conditions.

Study senior author Louis Ptacek, a neuroscientist at UCSF, said: “People are dogmatic that they need eight hours of sleep, but our work so far confirms that the amount and length of sleep people need varies based on genetics. Think of it as analogous to that. height, there is no perfect height and everyone is different. We have shown that the same is true for sleep.”

For more than a decade, Dr. Ptacek and his colleagues have studied people with Familial Natural Short Sleep (FNSS). They are the ones who only sleep 4-6 hours a night. They said this ability comes from their own family members before and extends to their generation.

The team identified five genes that play a fundamental role in creating this highly efficient form of sleep.

To assess the potential resilience of people with FNSS against neurodegenerative disease, the researchers bred mice with both the short-sleep gene and the gene that leads to Alzheimer’s disease. They found that their brains developed very few signs associated with dementia. The scientists believe that this efficient sleep gene may also protect against other neurodegenerative conditions.

A better understanding of the biological basis of sleep regulation will help scientists identify drugs that can help prevent sleep disturbances and improve health and mood.

Study co-author Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist at UCSF, said: “This work opens the door to a new understanding of how to delay and prevent many diseases. Our goal is to help people live healthier and longer lives through optimal sleep.” .

The study was published in the journal iScience.
