The female student said: “When I first came to the US, everything was very new. I felt overwhelmed because America is really big and sparse. That’s also why I miss the bustling restaurant atmosphere in Vietnam. I remember it like a day. I went out for dinner, it was only 8:30 – 9pm. I ran to the center but there were no shops open, so I had to take a taxi home with an empty stomach.

I also have a language barrier and cultural differences. I’m quite an introvert, so making friends is difficult. I used to have a time when I always felt sorry for myself and sad because my English was not really good, besides, I also missed my family.”

When he was in high school in Vietnam, Truc Linh was only ranked Good in his class and really didn’t dare to dream of getting into the top schools. But because of this low self-esteem, Linh lost the opportunity to enter her dream schools when she was hesitant to apply to the top schools. “I chose to take an easier route by applying to affordable schools. This makes me regret it so much” – Linh confided.

Finally, Linh chose to attend the University of Texas at Austin (Top 7 in the US for medicine and pharmacy). Her friend chose this school because of her academic achievements as well as having a long historical tradition in the United States. Linh completed her university program with a bachelor’s degree with distinction in just 3 years with a GPA of 3.9/4.0.

Linh is aware that her parents have to work very hard to “carry” the cost of studying in the US. In parallel with studying at school, Truc Linh also participates in an internship to experience the profession. The main job is to review the doctor’s prescription, work with the patient’s medical team on issues related to the treatment process (eg price, drug response, dosage…). There are times when she is so busy that she has to work 13 hours a day.

Linh confided that when choosing a university, she ranked based on the following criteria: Ranking – Scholarship – Learning environment – Evaluation of the teaching staff – Outstanding researches of the school.

The friend added: “I never thought I would pursue a career in the medical field. When I was in Vietnam, my academic ability was also normal, nothing outstanding. My scores in Math – Chemistry – Physics – Biology are still at a good level, so I don’t dare to dream about one day wearing a blouse.

That mindset changed when I started going to college. I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried subjects that I used to consider ‘difficult’. And from a lost person, I found the passion I wanted to pursue“.

Her friend refused to admit that she was a rich kid, but only confided: “I feel lucky because I was born in a well-off family and have the conditions to take care of my children’s education. Instead, I always try to study hard to achieve high academic results. Therefore, I think that I am ‘rich’ emotionally and intellectually, but financially, my family is far behind many people.”

She also revealed that constant effort and confidence are the core factors for her to achieve the above achievements. “Because I learned to believe in myself, I can always stay optimistic and find a way to motivate myself whenever I encounter obstacles on my learning path.“.

After 6 years of studying and living in the US, Truc Linh feels much more mature. When she was a child, what she wished for was cosmetics and luxury items. But now that doesn’t matter anymore. Linh knew how to appreciate money and labor when she worked part-time at the age of 17-18.

Sharing more about her future plans, Linh wants to become an intern in large pharmaceutical companies in the US such as Pfizer or Moderna. She also wants to build more social media platforms to reach more young people and produce more useful content.
