After the decisive turn, Boening shook Ouschan’s hand and jumped onto the table to celebrate his first world championship, after finishing second in 2015 and 2016. He became the first American player to win the world nine-ball pool championship. after 20 years, since Earl Strickland in Cardiff, Wales. The two players competed fiercely from the opening. Boening took a 1-0 lead but fouled the number 2 ball in the next game and was equalized 1-1. Boening surpassed Ouschan himself to become the number one player in the world. He received £60,000 ($78,000) for the championship, while Ouschan received £30,000.

Boening was born on July 14, 1983 in Rapid City, South Dakota, USA. He was born with a hearing loss, and had to wear a hearing aid while competing. He is the former number one in the world, recognized by the magazine Billiards Digest & AZBilliards chosen as the best player of the decade 2011-2020.

In 2016 in Doha, Qatar, Boening lost to Ouschan himself in the world final with a score of 6-13. He is a rare American player who regularly tours the movement in Taiwan or the Philippines, the Asian pool powerhouses.
