Frustrated by not being able to buy branded Chanel bags, many people cut the available bags to protest

Recently, many Russian women decided to protest on social networks in a special way because they were refused to buy accessories of the luxury brand Chanel.

Specifically, they expressed their outrage by destroying their expensive Chanel bags and attributed this to “Russian phobia”. TV presenter and actress Marina Ermoshkina said: “No other item or brand can match my love of country and self-respect.”

Marina Ermoshkina added that she is fighting against Russian “phobia” and the brands that support this antisemitism. If owning Chanel means selling her hometown, she doesn’t need Chanel.

“For us Russian women, owning Chanel means nothing. We are the face of this brand. Since childhood, we have always dreamed of buying bags. But no there’s no bag, or anything else, more than my love of country or my self-esteem,” she added.

Two celebrities decided to cut Chanel bags to protest that the company did not sell to Russians.

Using a similar approach, DJ Katya Guseva, with 587,000 Instagram followers said: “I’m saying no to Chanel. They forced me to sign a shameful document denying my homeland in favor of her brand. I’m against Russianphobia and against discrimination by nationality. To show you how serious I am, I’m simply going to cut this bag. I don’t need it anymore. Goodbye. , Chanel”.

Along with that, many other women such as businesswoman from Monaco – Victoria Bonya, Russian travel blogger Sharli Prokopif and a few others followed suit by ripping off their expensive Chanel bags. The protest took place after Chanel announced it was shutting down operations in Russia, even refusing to sell to Russians in other countries with the intention of bringing it back home.

Chanel’s move shows that luxury brands are adapting to sanctions despite facing many criticisms on social networks for “anti-Russia”. On Twitter, the Russian Foreign Ministry also criticized Chanel’s move.

Despite its attention, the above outrage of Russian women has met with mixed reactions. Some are commenting their actions are futile and are exaggerating things by cutting bags to protest the brand’s policy. Others consider the outcry unkind, like an organized act.

Doing business in Russia has become complicated since the country launched a military campaign in Ukraine. The US, UK and the European Union have imposed strong sanctions on Moscow.

Earlier, in early March, many world-famous luxury brands, including Chanel, Hermès, Prada and LVMH, closed their stores in Russia since Moscow started the war in Ukraine. Chanel on March 4 announced that it was closing all stores and had stopped shipping and e-commerce a few days earlier.

Although more and more wealthy Russians are interested in luxury goods, experts say it is still very small compared to major markets such as the US and China. According to investment bank Jefferies, the amount of money Russians spend on luxury goods accounts for about $9 billion in annual revenue, just 6% of Chinese spending and 14% of Americans.
