A new outbreak of Covid-19 in the city of Kunshan (China) has led to a new blockade and mandatory testing. This is likely to affect iPhone and iPad production.

Authorities in Kunshan ordered all 2.1 million residents to stay home and conduct daily testing as the area bordering Shanghai saw a record day’s increase in Covid-19 infections for the day. Saturday in a row. Many factories in the city – a key part of Apple’s supply chain – have also been ordered to stop production.

Reportedly, some of Apple’s biggest supply chain partners are based in Kunshan, including Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron, and Luxshare Precision. Components from printed circuit boards to machine parts are all manufactured in this city.

According to reports, authorities have asked Wistron and Pegatron to suspend the production of their devices for consumer electronics manufacturers. Although Apple was not mentioned, it is likely that the company’s manufacturing operations were affected. The suspension is effective from April 2 to April 12, but may be longer depending on the Covid-19 situation in Shanghai.

The plant shutdown will further weigh on the global supply chain, which is currently affected by component shortages, the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Back in March, the blockade in Shenzhen affected the shipping of Mac Studio and other products.

People in Con Son are asked to stay at home. Only one person per household is allowed to go out and buy necessities or essentials every two days. On April 8, the city recorded 25 cases of Covid-19 infected with the Omicron variant.
