Kia and Hyundai are ‘debting’ customers 1 million cars that cannot be handed over

Hyundai and Kia have reached a total of 1 million orders backlog due to a combination of reasons, such as semiconductor shortages, the Russia-Ukraine conflict leading to wiring supply problems, and shutdowns. factory operations in China when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out in this country.

At the beginning of 2021, the backlog of the two Korean auto giants was only 100,000 vehicles each, but this number exceeded 500,000 vehicles in March, The Korea Times quoted officials in the industry as saying. branch. The delay is creating a major barrier to the two brands’ target of selling 7.47 million vehicles this year. The number of delayed orders this year alone accounts for 15% of both Kia and Hyundai’s sales in 2021 of 6.66 million vehicles.

In Korea, Kia’s output in March was only 82% of capacity – a shortage of 26,000 vehicles. In which, 19,000 vehicles are short due to semiconductor problems while the remaining 7,000 are due to lack of wiring. Factories in the US, Mexico, Slovakia and India also suffered a sharp decline in output.

“The average number of contracts per day is increasing, but the backlog is also increasing due to production disruptions,” Kia explained in a meeting.

Kia Carnival buyers are waiting 8-11 months before receiving their vehicle, while Kia Sorento and Sportage Hybrid buyers are waiting 18 months. The Niro hybrid model is delayed for 11 months, K8 from 6 to 13 months, K5 from 5 to 11 months while the delivery time of Bongo model is 4 to 10 months.

Genesis models are also affected as GV60 and GV70 buyers are expected to wait 12 months to receive their vehicles. Customers buying a Hyundai Ioniq 5 also have to wait a similar amount of time.

“Recently, vehicle production was delayed due to a lack of supply of semiconductors and components, so the backlog of orders has increased,” a company spokesman said.

The global semiconductor shortage is expected to last through 2022. Market research firm AutoForecast Solutions says global auto production has fallen by 1.334 million vehicles this year due to supply chain disruptions .
