Lesson from the donkey: Look in the mirror and ask who you are

The unhappiness in human life is not realizing your own worth, and then pursuing a lifetime of distant desires ends up miserable.

A temple on the mountain has a donkey, every day in the rice mill room, the donkey toils and pulls the mill, listens to the verse of the bell, gradually, the donkey starts to hate this tasteless life and always meditates. : “If we could go out and see what the outside world is like without pulling a mill, listening to sutras, or smelling incense smoke, how good would it be!”

Before long, the opportunity also came. The temple abbot decided to send the donkey down the mountain to carry the goods. His heart is restless forever. The monk put a load on the donkey and urged it down the mountain alone.

Unexpectedly, when passersby saw the donkey, everyone knelt down on both sides of the road respectfully and bowed down.

At first, the donkey didn’t understand anything, and I don’t know why people bowed their heads to him, so he panicked and avoided it. However, it was all the same along the way, the donkey was involuntarily elated, thinking that maybe people worshiped him because he was a donkey that attained enlightenment, a noble donkey coming down from the temple. So every time it sees a person, the donkey suddenly becomes strutting, strutting, and arrogant. It stood still in the middle of the street happily accepting the worship and admiration of everyone.

After that trip, when he returned to the temple, the donkey thought he was very noble, he definitely refused to work, did not listen to scriptures, and stopped pulling the mill. The monk ran out of ways, had to let it down the mountain.

Just waiting for that, the donkey happily and leisurely left the temple. In the distance, the donkey saw a group of people beating drums and gongs coming towards him. He thought that people would surely come to greet him, so he swaggered, happily standing in the middle of the road, leisurely grazing.

The donkey did not know that it was a procession of people going to the bridegroom, suddenly a donkey swaggered, stupidly blocked the road, everyone was angry, carrying sticks chasing the fool. The donkey panicked and scurried back to the temple, when he got there, tired and injured, with only a little bit of decay left, the donkey indignantly complained to the monk: “It turns out that people’s hearts are evil, when I came down the mountain for the first time, everyone They all bowed down to me, but today I didn’t expect them to be so cruel to me,” said the donkey, resentful and breathless.

The monk sighed, “Poor donkey. That day, what people were bowing to was the Buddha statue that you carried on your back, not yourself.”

The greatest unhappiness in life is not being aware of yourself. We all look in the mirror every day, but has anyone ever wondered: “Are you aware of yourself?”

If you have money, other people only respect your money, not you, but you will misunderstand that other people worship you.

If you have power, other people only worship your power, not you, but you mistakenly think others are revering yourself.

If what you have is beauty, what people admire is just the beauty you have for a while, not necessarily yourself, but you make a myth that other people are admiring your beauty. myself.

When your money, fame, and beauty are gone, the person who chooses to be by your side at that time is because of your real, naked self.

What others worship is nothing more than the desires of their heart, not your momentary values.

The value of a human being comes from within, from within, from what’s in your head, in your heart, not from the outer things, which you work hard all your life for.

Being human before and after is the same, it’s always been true. How a person is not only reflects one’s intelligence, but also reflects one’s personal cultivation.

Anyone can give you love, praise, loving words, even money… but not everyone can give you knowledge, understanding, which money can’t buy, something you need for the rest of your life.

Lincoln said that character is like a tree, reputation is like a shade. We often think of the shadow of a tree, but do not know that the tree is the root. That’s why it’s so important to see yourself clearly.
