Manhole explosion in Times Square in New York causes crowds to sprint in horror

A manhole cover explosion in Times Square in New York on Sunday night sent people in panic sprinting from the scene.

Video showed an explosion, which could be heard for blocks in the touristy area, panicking hundreds of people. People in the area could hear screams and curses as they ran north, away from the sound of the explosion.

Those lounging on the famous red stairs must run towards the noise to descend the steps before turning around and racing in the opposite direction.

The New York City Fire Department said in a statement that firefighters responding to the scene shortly before 7 p.m. found three manholes that caught fire on the 43rd and 7th, near the Hard Rock Cafe in Times square.

The crews also detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide on the same block.

The FDNY said the scene was turned over to utility workers hours after the explosion occurred. No injuries have been reported.

Times Square and its surrounding areas, known as Hell’s Kitchen and Theater District, have seen a lot of crime makes headlines since the beginning of the pandemic.
