A getaway vehicle opened fire on the California Highway Patrol and the Inyo County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle during this lengthy chase that ended in Nevada, Nye County Sheriff Captain David Boruchowitz said. .

According to Inyo County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Carma Roper, the California part of the chase began at 9:15 p.m. Sunday with reports of “multiple shots fired” near the tiny desert community of Tecopa.

“The chase began in Inyo County, near the Tecopa area, and ended in Nye County,” Nevada, Roper said.

The suspects fled south to Baker, a popular stop for Los Angeles-Las Vegas motorists on Interstate 15, authorities said.

But instead of transferring to the well-traveled I-15, the suspects appear to have turned back from where they came from, heading north along the edge of Death Valley National Park and across Nevada on Highway 372. , the authorities said.

“I’m not so sure about this model,” Boruchowitz said. “I know there was a chase in Inyo County targeting Baker and then he turned around and was chased back.”

Boruchowitz estimated the suspects drove nearly 150 miles before they were stopped at a roadblock just inside Nevada Road in Pahrump around 1 a.m. and surrendered at 2 a.m.

No one was injured in the shooting and the suspects, a man and woman, were not immediately identified. Officials said the woman was in the driver’s seat when they surrendered but earlier police reports indicated the man was behind the wheel.

Multiple police agencies still shared notes on Monday to reenact the lengthy chase.

“We’re still putting all of this together,” says Boruchowitz.
