University enrollment 2022: ‘Shock reduction’ criteria for high school graduation exam results, schools tighten admission?

In the 2022 enrollment season, many universities in the North said they would sharply reduce their admissions quotas by the results of the high school graduation exam and consider it as a pre-qualification tool.

Deeply reduce enrollment quotas by reviewing high school graduation exam results

This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has launched 3 enrollment options for 2022 and significantly changed the number of targets.

Specifically, this school spends 10% – 20% of the admission target by high school graduation exam scores (last year, spent 80% – 85% for this method); 60 – 70% of the total target by reviewing the results of the thinking assessment exam organized by the school and 20 – 30% of the admission target by the talent selection method.

Thus, it can be seen that Hanoi University of Science and Technology has been quite “aggressive” in deeply reducing the enrollment quota according to the traditional admission method and supplementing and implementing many other options in enrollment.

If last year National Economics University spent from 80% – 85% for admission from high school graduation exam results, this year’s enrollment season this school is expected to spend 10% – 15% for this method. The remaining criteria are for direct recruitment and admission according to the school’s own project.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Trieu – Head of Training Management Department, National Economics University – said: The school is following the recommendation of the Ministry of Education and Training that schools and majors with a high level of competition only use the results of the high school graduation exam as a guide. screening and prequalification tools; then additional forms of selection are required.

Many schools consider admission by high school graduation exam results as a pre-qualification tool

“We have researched, if we consider the high school graduation exam scores as a tool for pre-qualification, then the school organizes another exam to select, it will be very difficult for the school, the candidates, and the parents. The best way is to group schools together to organize common exams or use results from reputable, quality-assured exams.

In the end, we decided to choose the option, using the admission method from the results of the competency assessment exam of the two national universities and the thinking exam chaired by Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Trieu shared.

Mr. Trieu further analyzed that in the past 2 years, the high school graduation period is no longer the national high school exam. Therefore, the goal of enrollment is secondary.

Dr. Le Viet Khuyen – Vice President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Vietnam welcomed a number of higher education institutions to organize their own exams to assess the ability and thinking of candidates and this is a good sign.

However, in reality, not all schools can afford to hold the exam. Moreover, if each school has its own ability assessment exam, students who want to take the exam in 3 schools will have to participate in 3 exams that take a lot of time and effort. Therefore, it is also necessary to evaluate and see which schools are sufficient and which are not eligible to hold the exam.

There will be no more situations where 1 candidate passes multiple schools

For admission in 2021, there is a virtual candidate status, one student is admitted to many different universities in the same examination. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy – Director of the Higher Education Department (Ministry of Education and Training), this fact affects the chances of other candidates’ admission and makes it difficult to predict the enrollment of the institution. educate…

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy analyzed that the cause of the above situation is that the schools use many methods and combinations of admissions for a major, but the allocation of quotas is not reasonable, or the enrollment is not correct with the requirements. the published number for each method of admission, leading to unfairness for candidates and some negative consequences in public opinion.

In addition, schools apply many different enrollment methods, but there are not enough measures to ensure fairness among candidates. Some schools call candidates for early admission without updating the data on the general system, leading to an increase in the number of virtual candidates. There are also schools that have not really created conditions for candidates to choose the field of study according to their priority and most capable aspirations.

In addition, some training institutions declared that the enrollment quotas were not consistent between the systems, or did not follow the plan and complete the process for determining the quotas. There are also schools that do not have control over the prequalification conditions.

Therefore, candidates who are not eligible are still admitted and have to deal with problems that arise after the candidate enters the school. Some schools enter information about the floor score, the pre-qualification conditions on the system that do not match the announced enrollment scheme…

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy informed that this year, the Ministry of Education and Training plans to adjust some contents in university and college enrollment; In which, it is expected to build a common virtual filtering software for all admission methods, including the university’s own admission method instead of just virtual filtering according to the method of admission based on Graduation exam scores. High school as before.

“Thus, each candidate will only pass 1 wish in 1 method, there is no longer the situation where 1 candidate can pass to many schools in many different admission methods like in previous years”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy shared. shall.
