The aircraft featured in the groundbreaking flight was the Airbus ZEROe Demonstrator, an A380 that has been modified to be used for test flights, according to the Airbus Group website.

For this particular flight, the A380 used 27 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – made mainly of cooking oil and waste grease. This fuel powers the A380’s Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.

SAF is an alternative to fossil fuels. Instead of being refined from petroleum, SAF is produced from resources such as biologically derived oils, agricultural by-products, or CO2 no fossils.

Two special flights of A380 using SAF fuel departed from Blagnac airport in Toulouse city (France) to Nice airport (France) on March 28 and 29. Each flight lasts 3 hours.

The Airbus A380 is the world’s first and largest twin-aisle, four-engine, wide-body jet airliner to date, developed by Airbus.

Previously, Airbus also successfully organized a test flight for two types of Airbus A350 and Airbus A319 aircraft using SAF in 2021.

The current use of biofuels to power the world’s largest passenger aircraft (A380) marks another step forward in the experimental program. Airbus aspires to bring the world’s first zero-emissions aircraft to market by 2035.

Airbus is not alone in pursuing clean aviation with fuel made from “edible oil”.

In 2012, Boeing made the first biofuel-powered crossing of the Pacific Ocean on its 787 Dreamliner. In 2014, Boeing even opened a biofuel factory in China to ensure a long-term supply.

In highlighting the potential of SAF, Airbus refers to the Waypoint 2050 report drafted by aeronautical experts in collaboration. This report identifies the implementation of SAF as the only major opportunity to meet the targets for a 53-71% reduction in carbon emissions.

Currently, all Airbus aircraft are licensed to fly with a blend of 50% fossil oil and 50% SAF. Airbus aims to achieve 100% SAF certification by the end of the decade.

TTO – European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has received an order for 255 aircraft from the US company Indigo Partners, and this is Airbus’ first major contract since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
