Japan develops new technology, amazingly long phone battery life

Research on how to solve the battery problem in smartphones is actually underway. Researchers have been grappling with sustainable solutions for how to make batteries that last longer in smartphones, and have made huge improvements to date.

Improve phone battery life

However, the problem persists because most smartphone batteries, including high-end and mid-range models, lose their original capacity within the first few years of use. In fact, most smartphone batteries will lose up to a fifth of their capacity within the first year of use.

But it all seems about to change when researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) have come up with a revolutionary material that helps batteries maintain their original capacity (up to up to 95%) for a minimum of 5 years, thus extending the battery life inside your device, be it a smartphone, laptop or even an electric vehicle.

According to Japanese scientists, the internal structure of current batteries causes them to gradually degrade with each charge, and it is reported that after 500 charges, up to 40% of battery capacity can be lost due to adhesives. The battery inside is not working properly.

So, scientists at JAIST, led by Professor Noriyoshi Matsumi, have discovered an adhesive material that has been shown to be superior to existing technology. The battery cathode in use today has an adhesive material called Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) which does not have outstanding performance. After just 500 charges, conventional batteries using PVDF lose up to 35% of their original capacity. This leads to a decline in smartphone battery life after a year or two of use.

However, the new adhesive material, named Bis-imino-acenaphthenequinone-Paraphenylene (BP), is different. The adhesive allows the battery to retain 95% of its capacity even after more than 1700 charge cycles. As a result, the battery remains effective for up to 5 years without significantly reducing its original capacity.

The new technology will help in developing more durable battery products, said Matsumi. We hope smartphone brands will expand their partnership with Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) in implementing new battery technology that will help produce durable and reliable batteries. more reliability for smartphones and other technology devices in the near future.

Similar earlier in February 2021, Huawei was granted a patent for a silicon-carbon composite material and its production method. The company intends to use this material in new lithium-ion batteries to extend their lifespan.

According to GizChina, in the patent description, Huawei talks about a super-strong composite material, consisting of a core covered with an alkaline layer. The silicon core is filled with amorphous carbon, while the pore size does not exceed 50 nm.

The content of Huawei’s patent states that the tiny pore structure of the silicon-carbon composite effectively reduces the contact area between the silicon material and the electrolytes, thereby reducing the possibility of a reaction. accessories and prolong battery life.

At the same time, the graphite framework can effectively reduce the volumetric expansion and contraction of the material to improve the structural stability and energy density of the composite. Even so, it’s still unclear how much more efficient this type of battery is.
