Japanese club brings 66 members to Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh CityYokohama Marinos arrived at Tan Son Nhat airport on the morning of April 12 with a large force, to prepare for the matches in Group H AFC Champions League 2022 – including HAGL.

In the 66 members of the J-League 2021 runner-up, there are 30 players. They also carry four tons of luggage including equipment for training, competition and food.

Yokohama Marinos members will be tested for Covid-19 by PCR method at Park Royal Hotel. While waiting for the results, which is expected to be around eight hours, they must stay in a hotel room.

Yokohama is the first foreign club in Group H to come to Vietnam. It is expected that today, K-League 1 champion Jeonbuk Hyundai will also be present, while Sydney FC will arrive tomorrow.

Before coming to Vietnam, Yokohama was in high form, ranked second in the J-League 1 with only two points less than the top of the table Kawasaki Frontal.

HAGL was approved by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to choose Thong Nhat Stadium as the home ground to host the matches in Group H, from April 16 to May 2 in the first leg – second leg format.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has sent 12 officials and professional staff to Vietnam. Besides, there are 17 referees, including seven referees and 10 assistant referees. Referee Alali Ahmad (Kuwait), who controls the match between Vietnam and Indonesia in the second stage of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, is also present.

The first match of Group H will take place between HAGL and Yokohama at 6pm on April 16. Tickets to watch the matches have three denominations, including 50,000 VND (stand C, D), 100,000 VND (stand B) and 200,000 VND (stand A). Tickets are sold via official mail and directly at Thong Nhat yard from April 14 to May 1.

In history, no Vietnamese team has passed the group stage of the AFC Champions League. As for HAGL, this is the first time in 17 years that they back to the AFC Champions League arena.

This year’s AFC Champions League has 40 participating clubs, divided by geographic location in the West and East. Due to Covid-19, the tournament continues to play in focus, instead of the home-away form. The teams will compete in a round-robin two rounds (total of six matches), to choose the top five teams and the three best runners-up to enter the 1/8 round. Due to the November 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the tournament will last until 2023.
