Kurt Cobain’s guitar in ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ video is expected to fetch $800K at auction

Kurt Cobain’s iconic blue guitar rocked in Nirvana’s ’90s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video is expected to fetch $800,000 when it goes up for auction next month.

With “Smells Like Teen Spirit” reaching more than 1.4 billion views on YouTube, 1969’s Green Fender is arguably one of the most popular productions in rock music, said Martin Nolan, chief executive officer of Julien’s Auctions.

“One of the most iconic guitars ever to appear at auction, this is the blue Mustang Fender guitar, one of Kurt Cobain’s all-time favorite guitars,” said Nolan, stands beside a display of Cobain memorabilia at Julien’s Auction’s Beverly Hills Gallery.

“The guitar comes with the original carrying case and strap, so that… is really important for collectors when they come to auction to know it’s original,” says Nolan. Nolan said, who noted that the guitar had stayed with the family. since Cobain’s death in 1994.

The Cobain is the star of the auction house’s Musical Icons auction, taking place in New York and online May 20-22.

Nolan said the auction house had conservatively estimated the price for the guitar between $600,000 and $800,000 but noted that “it’s a very conservative auction estimate.”

The auction house says part of the proceeds will go to a mental health charity.

The auction also features other items, including an original artwork by Michael Jackson’s Kurt Cobain, expected to fetch up to $40,000, and one of his cars, a 1965 Dodge Dart, expected to cost between $400,000 and $600,000.
