Multiple people shot in New York subway station, explosives found

Reuters news agency, citing a source from New York police, said the incident happened at a subway station on 36th Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, near the famous Chinatown.

“Stay away from this area,” the New York Police Department (NYPD) urged people through the social network Twitter. Authorities had previously found an unexploded ordnance and said they had checked everything and found no other devices.

The city’s fire department put a figure of “13 people injured at this point,” while ABC News, citing police sources, said at least five people had been shot.

The incident happened just one day after the President America Joe Biden announced new gun control measures, increasing efforts to limit “ghost guns”, homemade firearms that should not be on the regulatory list.

Videos and photos on social media showed police swarming around the entrance to the train station. At least 3 tracks have been suspended for investigation.

Police are looking for a suspect believed to be a man wearing a gas mask and construction jacket. This person is said to have thrown a smoke generator on the platform to distract the attention of the crowd.

Police have not declared it a targeted attack, an act of terrorism or a suicide.
