“The epidemic is in a stage of rapid increase, the spread in the community has not been effectively controlled. It is forecast that in the next few days, the number of infected people will remain at a high level,” Mr. Lei was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. Zhenglong, an official with China’s National Health Commission, spoke about the situation in Shanghai at a meeting in Beijing on April 12.

On April 12, Shanghai recorded 22,342 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of cases since the beginning of March 2022 to now to 227,000. Most of the cases were asymptomatic, of which only 994 cases recorded on April 12 were symptomatic.

Since the beginning of this week, Shanghai has begun to relax the blockade and apply the measure of classifying the area, according to 3 risk levels, to fight the epidemic. Accordingly, areas that have not recorded infections for 2 weeks are classified as the lowest risk and people can move and shop.

However, the implementation in the early days was confusing and some residents complained that they were allowed to go out in the morning but were later banned.

Newspaper South China Morning Post According to the new regulation in Duong Pho district, people even in low-risk areas are still only allowed to move around their houses and are prohibited from going out if there are high-risk areas around.
