The most “toxic” family in 2022 and the problem of violence at Brilliant Night

Deep, gritty and haunting, those are the emotions that Brilliant night brought to the audience in his premiere. The film’s story begins with the funeral scene of Mr. Sang – a prestigious person in the area. In order to match the position and reputation of the family, after his death, his wife and son, Mr. Toan – Mrs. Gai, held a lavish and flashy funeral. But this glamor is only a cover to cover the rottenness, decay and corruption inside.

Because of his addiction to gambling, Mr. Toan (Kien An) “baked” all the inheritance left by his father, and even had to borrow hot money from Gypsies. The day of the funeral was also the deadline to pay the debt, or else he would be killed the next morning. In fact, the family still has a villa, but instead of selling it to pay the debt, Mr. Toan forced his children to bear the burden. Originally, the three brothers Hoang, Thanh, and Bao thought they would also get some inheritance money. But in the end, what awaits them is just a huge debt.

Thought he inherited the fortune, but the three brothers Hoang – Bao – Thanh only received the debt.

If the story only encapsulates how Hoang, Thanh, and Bao can help their father pay the debt, Brilliant night will not be a work worth discussing. Borrowing the debt story, the film gradually reveals the dark and dirty corner of this family.

When “home” becomes too scary to return to

Kim Bao – Xuan Thanh’s two daughters and Mrs. Gai were both scolded and beaten by Mr. Toan many times in the past. Terrible childhood memories, years of pressure to live with a patriarchal, abusive father made Kim Bao find himself in stimulants, and Xuan Thanh became a “half-depressed” person. .

Mr. Toan considered Xuan Thanh a madman. But when the debt piled up on her head, he wanted her to call her rich ex-husband (Dung) even though he knew that the two of them had just divorced. Not only Mr. Toan, but also Mrs. Gai as well as the couple Kim Hoang (the eldest) – Bich Ngoc also repeatedly pressed Xuan Thanh instead of understanding her dilemma. Even knowing that once receiving Dung’s money, Xuan Thanh will not be allowed to see his daughter Mai Anh again, that selfishness has not disappeared.

Although Xuan Thanh has just divorced Dung, the family still wants her to beg for help from him.

For Xuan Thanh, family is not a home, but a scary place to return to. Here she did not receive much love but only mental torture, being taken advantage of. Looking at her messy cut hair, her arm full of incisions or the video of her repeatedly slapping herself in the face with her hand in an obsessive way, perhaps many viewers had to exclaim: Why didn’t she just ignore it all? or rise up strongly to protest against his “toxic masculinity” father?

Family is not a home for Xuan Thanh.

However, if we can say that giving up is giving up, we will not come across parents who should have enjoyed their old age and have to sell their houses and sell their houses to pay their children’s debts. As for protesting, can Xuan Thanh do that? In theory yes, but reality is a different story.

In psychology there is a syndrome called Chained Elephant. The elephant was imprisoned since childhood and could not get out. When it is an adult, even with its strength, it can break the shackles and run into the forest. But the elephant did not know that and resigned to being ordered. Xuan Thanh is the same, although she has grown up, but the horrible memories of childhood make her probably still carry an invisible fear with her father. Moreover, Xuan Thanh is also a weak person, just wishing for a peaceful life. Obviously with such a personality, it becomes even more impossible to definitively cut off from the family.

Usually, violence is often associated with whipping and beating. But in Brilliant night, the audience also gets to see another aspect, which is the emotional damage – sometimes even more terrible than the physical pain. The cause of psychological trauma is not only due to being passive, but also from daily discrimination with the idea of ”true grandchild” or “heir to son”.

Light is found at the end of darkness

Throughout the film, the audience’s emotions for Mr. Toan’s character were only contempt and indignation. But as it turned out, he was also a victim of abuse. It seems that he himself is not aware of the horror of what he has done to Mrs. Gai, Kim Bao and especially Xuan Thanh. The proof is that he once said: “When he was alive, he (Mr. Sang) also beat and cursed me, but I am not as crazy as him (Xuan Thanh).”

In Mr. Toan’s family, everyone has their own psychological problems, but no one seems to be aware that they need to break the deep-rooted thought patterns in their subconscious. Then a “push” occurred and pushed the family’s tragic shadow to the end. But it is also from the depths of darkness that light is found. The light here is the light in thought, when Xuan Thanh, Mr. Toan or even Kim Hoang “wake up”. They realize that they need to take action to end the violence that exists as a necessity in their family. This is also the reason why the movie is named Brilliant night.

Brilliant night and excellent cast

The brilliant night featured two famous actors Kien An and Phuong Dung. But in general, the film’s cast does not include “rating-guaranteed” names with visual faces who want to go to theaters. However, from a professional perspective, each of them performed too well their roles.

It is thanks to these excellent incarnations that the film’s story becomes more real and touches the audience’s emotions. Many people shed tears when witnessing the stalemate and despair that the characters had to go through. And this is clearly a great success of the production team.

During the premiere, some people even wondered why Nha Uyen was able to put a Xuan Thanh with such a “terrible” complicated interior on the film. And when she answered that she herself had experienced the feeling of abuse, the atmosphere once again seemed to sag.

Violence has long been a problem in society. It leaves a legacy, a terrible psychological obsession for the victim. For those who have not experienced it directly, it is difficult to understand how terrifying that feeling is. Therefore, it is a sad fact that many people are still taking this issue lightly. But after watching Brilliant Night, they will definitely have a different look.
