The Writers’ Union responded to the accusation of PTBT Newspaper raping a colleague, what did Da Thao Phuong’s family say?

‘We just want to wake up Luong Ngoc An’s conscience, make an apologetic move, want to go through Phuong’s heartbreaking story to see how to prevent sexual abuse and stop attacking victims of abuse. sexual harm”

This is the share of Ms. Ham Anh (poet Da Thao Phuong’s sister – who filed a complaint against the PTBT newspaper Luong Ngoc An for raping her more than 20 years ago) after receiving response letter from Vietnam Writers Association.

According to Ms. Ham Anh, she received a response letter from the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, dated April 10, 2022.

Ms. Ham Anh said she had read and memorized all the files that Phuong still kept, including a report on the incident that happened on April 14, 2000 written by Mr. Le Tam and signed by him. Thanh Chuong, Ms. Ta Kim Lien, Phong Diep…; Phuong’s denunciations in 2000, 2003; reported by Luong Ngoc An in 2000, 2003; Minutes of working of functional departments, leaders of Van Nghe Newspaper …

“Personally, I am very grateful to the brothers and sisters whose names were included in the report of the incident, and to Do Bach Mai, Dang Bay, and Ta Kim Lien who conducted the interviews with Luong Ngoc An. , Da Thao Phuong, taking notes. I feel that you have tried to be objective and protect the victim, but for many reasons, those efforts may not have worked.

The handling of the leadership of the Van Nghe Newspaper at that time made my family and the public raise many question marks.

We understand that Luong Ngoc An just pushed our Phuong to the edge, but the treatment was not satisfactory by the leaders of Van Nghe Newspaper, the subsequent behavior and the malicious gossip around Phuong that day. Only really pushed Phuong into the abyss,” said Mrs. Ham Anh.

Ms. Ham Anh said that, after more than 20 years of the incident, Phuong only sent a denunciation to the Writers’ Association and Van Nghe Newspaper, but did not send it anywhere else because “we expect from those agencies and organizations. a voice of humanity, not just a voice of cold administrative processes and procedures…”.

Ms. Ham Anh also added that the decision to bring Phuong’s heartbreaking story to the public was an extremely difficult decision for Phuong. It’s no different than accepting to let the wheels of the train grind through your heart, mind, and body again.

“And this time, my whole family and I are willing to bear that pain with Phuong so that Phuong’s truth and Phuong’s horror obsession can be brought out to the public.

When Phuong brought the case to the public, we consulted lawyers and experts on sexual abuse.

We understand the case has expired for legal handling and understand many issues surrounding it.

Although indignant and painful at the crime of the perpetrator, we do not act out of hatred. We just want to help Phuong speak the truth that Phuong has tried to send a denunciation to the Management Board of Van Nghe Newspaper many times before but has not been satisfactorily resolved.

The perpetrator took advantage of Phuong’s panic, fear of being famous and marketed to control and spread fake news to create a male-female relationship that caused the case to be drowned. the world – how painful it is for a girl who is still young with life experience and lacks understanding of how to deal with abuse and sexual abuse”, said Ms. Ham Anh.

Da Thao Phuong’s sister also said that before bringing up the old story, Phuong had a conversation with her. All of her immediate family and close friends have painful memories of the years when Phuong suddenly changed, her personality seemed to be deformed because of the pain.

Phuong committed suicide many times unsuccessfully because her mother tried her best to follow up. The times taking Phuong to wash her intestines are memories that now knowing the whole reason why Phuong was in such a mental crisis, “we were like crabs torn in half”.

“Those years were a period when the awareness of society was not as advanced as it is now. But actually, as you can see, until now, together with family, public opinion voiced strong support. So strong, but there are still malicious questions, opinions or direct attacks on the victim, then try to ask, if on that day, if Phuong said it all, would Phuong still be able to protect her interests or not? I have to use death to whitewash myself?”, Mrs. Ham Anh said painfully.

Answering the question “with the feedback of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, what will the family do next”, Ms. Ham Anh said: “We only know how to stay together, tell each other to keep our hearts pure, respect the truth and the law, believe in the conscience of people”.

“We do not ask Luong Ngoc An to atone, nothing can compensate for the past 20 years of Phuong and our family.

We just want to wake up Luong Ngoc An’s conscience, make an apologetic move, want to go through Phuong’s heartbreaking story to raise everyone’s awareness about sexual abuse, how to prevent sexual abuse, stop attacking victims of sexual abuse,” said Ms. Ham Anh.
