Urgently deploying the project of upgrading Cho Gao canal

Opening up waterways to develop logistics for the Mekong Delta is one of the important tasks mentioned in the master plan on development of waterway infrastructure to 2030 approved by the Prime Minister.

In fact, in the past 2 years of the epidemic, waterways have become effective “green channels” for transporting goods. Therefore, the removal of infrastructure bottlenecks so that the waterway is the import and export transport channel of the Southwest region is continuing to be promoted.

“The Cho Gao canal route will contribute to making the circulation of goods faster and more convenient and costs can also be reduced,” said Pham Van Trong, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tien Giang province.

Leaders of Tien Giang province said that in May, 100% of the site will be handed over to the investor for construction.

As for the Waterway Management Board, the Ministry of Transport aims to bring the project to the finish line about 2 months earlier when it is determined that this is an important arterial traffic route.

“The sooner the project is completed, the economic efficiency will increase that day. When the project is fully completed according to the plan, the throughput per year will be 70 million tons and if the fleet changes, the throughput will increase. up to 80 million tons”, said Mr. Duong Thanh Hung, Director of the Waterway Project Management Board, Ministry of Transport.

When the infrastructure is cleared, it will contribute to ensuring the safety of inland waterway vehicles, while helping to reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of goods in the Mekong Delta.

“The advantages of the Mekong Delta will be promoted. With current conditions and even in the future, when there is a deep-water port in the Hau River area, this canal route must still be used,” said Deputy Minister of Transport. Download Nguyen Xuan Sang commented.

The project of renovating and upgrading Cho Gao canal phase 2 has a length of 10 km, a total investment of more than 1,300 billion VND, when completed, it will remove the “bottleneck” of water freight transport between 13 Delta provinces.
