Vietnamese movies lag behind Hollywood blockbusters during the holidays

“Brilliant Night”, “Through the Sea to Do Chi” – two new Vietnamese films – lost to the heat of the blockbuster Harry Potter extravaganza when it was screened during the holidays.

Representative of CJ – the issuer Brilliant night – said that after three days of screening on the occasion of Hung King’s death anniversary (April 9-11), the film earned more than seven billion VND. The box office revenue is far below the top of the box office last weekend – Fantastic beasts 3 (about 25 billion VND). In previous holidays, like Valentine’s Day or the Lunar New Year, Vietnamese films topped the competition for foreign films.

Even so, the publisher said the results of Brilliant night quite positive because it belongs to the indie (indie) genre, not being communicated as strongly as entertainment lines. The unit expects sales of upcoming works to increase due to positive word-of-mouth effects.

Brilliant night is the work of American director Aaron Toronto – living in Vietnam for 16 years. The content is encapsulated in a night of mourning in the South. Mr. Toan (Kien An) and his wife Gai (Phuong Dung) held a grand and bustling funeral in accordance with local customs. When his children attended the funeral, he confessed that he owed the gang a lot of money because of his loss of money, the gangsters were surrounding the house so that he would not run away. His children pushed each other because each of them had problems. The hidden memories gradually revealed, the funeral became a tragedy when the family turned to accuse each other.

The work is highly appreciated for the script when it focuses on domestic violence, depression… The images of violence are faithfully reproduced, such as the scene where Mr. Toan slapped and pressed his wife’s head into the water jar. However, many details in the script are not reasonable, especially events related to gangsters. Most of the dialogue is unnatural and lengthy.

How do you go through the pool? – released at the same time – also failed to create holiday charm. The re-released film of artist Quang Minh only reached nearly 750 million VND. The work was filmed four years ago but had to be delayed due to translation. The film chooses a perspective on the life of young Vietnamese people in the US through the love story of Tuan (Thuan Nguyen) and Julie (Phuong Titi).

The script is light, the acting is only at the level of the role, the film is difficult to keep viewers. Aside from the lead couple, the supporting roles lack depth. The rare plus point of the film lies in the bright, eye-catching images. On Box Office – an independent box office observer, over the weekend, the film ranked behind previous foreign works, such as Morbius (3.7 billion), The bad guys (1.2 billion dong)…

After Tet and Valentine’s holidays, the revenue of Vietnamese films gradually decreases. Sweet Trap – released in theaters in mid-February – currently leading the domestic market with revenue of more than 90 billion VND. The films that came out after that were all low to medium grossing, like Incubus (36 billion VND), Western girls love (7.1 billion), even a heavy loss like Listeners (more than 2 billion).

Many directors said they did not set expectations when bringing films to theaters on this occasion, partly because of the epidemic situation, the audience had not recovered their taste. Actor Vo Dang Khoa – investor Western girls love – said to only set a break-even goal to have funds for further production. Directed by Luong Dinh Dung – action film 578with H’Hen Niê participating – accepting billions of dong loss to reschedule the show and find a better time, even though it was expected to release the film in March. Maika, the girl from another planet – work by director Ham Tran – also moved the show to May.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai – CGV content director – said that most producers release films with the mindset of rebuilding the market and creating a habit of going to theaters for audiences. Mr. Hai said: “Probably by the end of April, with the launch of Wolf Bar, Super easy job…, domestic films have prospered again”.
