3 blind men attacked because of his sexual orientation, officials in Florida say

Three family members are accused of brutally beating a man and leaving him permanently blind because of his sexual orientation, Florida prosecutors said.

Inna Makarenko, 44 ​​years old; her husband is Yevhen Makarenko, 43 years old; and their son Oleh Makarenko, 21, were taken into custody by the Broward Sheriff’s Office on March 10 on charges of first-degree murder, battery and kidnapping.

Prosecutors said the 31-year-old victim, of Pompano Beach, was assaulted in August 2021 because of his sexual orientation.

The attorney’s office said he was beaten so severely that he was permanently blind and suffered other serious injuries. A subpoena says the suspects attempted to kill the victim.

Prosecutors said he chose to remain anonymous.

A fourth person, Vladyslav Makarenko, 25, was arrested in Alabama and is being investigated for possible connection to the case. There are no charges against him.

Inna, Yevhen and Oleh Makarenko all pleaded not guilty. They are being held in prison, online records show. Their attorneys did not immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday.
