Acute myocarditis due to Covid-19

Most cases of acute myocarditis caused by Covid are related to the underlying disease, especially those with pneumonia. Myocarditis is a rare but dangerous condition that can cause heart failure and make it hard for the heart to pump blood. An episode of myocarditis can go away on its own or with treatment but can lead to long-term damage.

“A small previous study showed that acute myocarditis rarely occurs in people with Covid-19. We continue to analyze the data to provide further information on the occurrence of myositis. acute heart failure when a patient is hospitalized for Covid-19,” said Enrico Ammirati, a cardiologist at the De Gasperis Cardiovascular Center and the Transplant Center at the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Italy, a co-author of the study.

The international study examined the health data of nearly 57,000 F0 hospitalized between February 2020 and April 2021 in the US and Europe. Among them, 54 people hospitalized for Covid-19 were determined to have acute myocarditis, based on the results of myocardial biopsy and magnetic resonance imaging. Most of them were in the 38-year-old group and 61% were male. All cases have not been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Research by Mr. Enrico Ammirati and colleagues showed that acute myocarditis occurred more often in 57.4% of people with pneumonia and 32% in those with abnormal blood flow. People with Covid-19 with underlying conditions such as myocarditis and associated pneumonia had a mortality rate of 15.1%.

In addition, about 20.4% of people with myocarditis who also have pneumonia often receive mechanical support to deal with problems related to circulatory arrest or death during hospitalization; 38.9% of people with severe myocarditis received immediate drug support and mechanical circulatory support. Some people were identified as likely to have myocarditis based on preliminary testing, the authors note, but they were not included in the final analysis because they did not respond to all of the study’s protocols.

“Although rare, patients hospitalized with acute myocarditis associated with Covid-19 require more intensive care, accounting for 70.5% of F0 hospitalizations,” said Marco Metra, professor of cardiology at University of Brescia in Brescia, Italy, said study co-author.
