Increasing number of salmonella infections caused by chocolate in Europe

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the European Food Safety Authority said yesterday that the majority of salmonella infections are in children under 10 years of age, many of which require hospitalization.

The above agencies also recommended that countries continue to monitor because the number of infections is likely to increase.

Last week, the famous Italian confectionery group Ferrero was forced to close its factory in Belgium and recall Kinder products for sale in the US, UK and some European countries, just before Easter – occasion when many Westerners often buy chocolate eggs as gifts.
