US President Biden called Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine “genocide”, while the Kremlin criticized his comments as “unacceptable”.

“It is difficult to accept that this is the statement of a president of the United States, a country that has committed many notorious crimes in recent times,” the spokesman added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed his US counterpart Biden’s comments, calling them “true words of a real leader”.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron refused to call the Russian military’s actions in Ukraine “genocide”, stressing that the escalation in the statements would not help stop the war. Macron said the terms should be used with caution, especially when “Ukrainians and Russians are brotherly peoples”.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on April 13 accused Russia of “violating human rights and international humanitarian law” during its military operation in Ukraine. The OSCE report addresses allegations of attacks on civilian targets in the southern port city of Mariupol.

Russia has not commented on this information. Since the start of the operation on February 24, Moscow has repeatedly insisted that it only attacks military targets, not civilians.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 4.6 million Ukrainians have been displaced abroad, and 7.1 million have been displaced within Ukraine. The United Nations says at least 1,842 civilians have been killed and 2,493 injured in Ukraine related to the conflict, but the actual number is likely much higher.
