NSO Group spyware targets European officials

The latest report from Reuters shows, Iphone of senior officials at the EC has become the target of tools from the NSO Group. These officials include Didier Reynders – the European Commissioner of Justice since 2019 – as well as at least four other EC officials.

At the moment it is not clear whether the attackers can gain access to the targets’ iPhones or what they will gain if they do so successfully.

A notable detail, Pegasus does not appear to be the tool that the NSO Group used for this task, instead security researchers say that the attackers used a tool called ForcedEntry for the attacks. The effort took place from February to September of last year.

In his statement, NSO Group insists they are not responsible for any hacking attempts and that “they cannot happen with NSO tools”. The European Parliament is expected to form a commission on April 19 to investigate the use of surveillance software in European member states.
