Saving a student with a broken bottle cap, the female teacher is like a hero

East Orange Community Charter School teacher JaNiece Jenkins said she never thought she would use the Heimlich maneuver in her classroom. The Heimlich is a rapid first aid procedure for the management of upper airway obstruction due to foreign bodies such as food, toys, or other objects.

The incident happened on the morning of April 6 during math class. Robert Stoner, a 3rd grader, realized he was choking and ran towards Jenkins.

“At the time, I just thought the student needed my help. I’ll help him.”Jenkins shared.

This female teacher said that she had learned about life-saving skills. “Fortunately, these skills work. I’m just grateful that he’s okay.”This teacher said.

Stoneker said she broke the bottle cap when she tried to use her teeth to open a water bottle. “The water was pushed out causing the bottle cap to splash in my throat,” said the boy.

When he tried to cough to get the bottle cap to come out but it didn’t work, Stoneker ran to the teacher and pointed at his throat. The cap popped out of the boy’s mouth a few seconds after Jenkins performed the Heimlich maneuver.

After the incident, Stoneker, who is a fan of superheroes, said that teacher Jenkins had become a hero in his eyes.

East Orange Community Charter School and the city are planning a ceremony in honor of Jenkins in the next few days.
