Throughout world history, war has caused many people to flee their homes or flee their countries for refuge. They are forced to go through long journeys in search of safety.

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, about 4 million people have left Ukraine for neighboring countries and millions more are internally displaced.

Second World War. Conflict broke out across Europe and the Pacific, and millions of people were displaced. Studies of the refugee crisis caused by this war show that the total number of displaced people ranges from 40 to 60 million people.

South Sudan Civil War. The civil war in South Sudan that broke out in 2013 caused Africa’s biggest refugee crisis. The war between the government and the resistance forces has displaced more than 4 million people.

Iraq War. The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 caused a protracted domestic conflict, and the aftermath of the war is still felt today. More than 9.2 million Iraqis had to flee to neighboring countries or evacuate within the country.

Crisis in Somalia. Three decades of internal conflict, coupled with relentless natural disasters and food shortages, have left many Somalis with no choice but to seek shelter and security in neighboring countries. As of March 2022, 750,000 Somalis have been evacuated to neighboring countries and more than 2.6 million internally displaced.
