The country’s ultraviolet rays ‘at dangerous levels’

The ultraviolet (UV) index of the whole country, except Hanoi, is in the high to very high range 7-10; in which Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Ca Mau and Can Tho have times above 10 which are very dangerous.

The information was announced by Mr. Hoang Gia Nam, forecaster of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on April 13. Hanoi is the only city in the country today with a UV index of moderate to high risk of harm (4-7).

According to Mr. Nam, it is forecasted that on April 14, the UV index in the Northern region will be very high (level 9-10), and will gradually decrease in the next two days. In the Central and Southern regions, the UV index in the coming days will remain at its maximum at Very high risk of harm (8-11). Thus, the whole country is entering a high and widespread heat wave.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), UV index ranging from 0-2 is considered low, index 8-10 burns exposure time is 25 minutes. UV index of 11 or higher is considered extremely high, very dangerous, the risk of skin damage, eye burns if exposed to the sun for about 15 minutes without protection. Excessive exposure to sunlight in a short time will cause sunburn, eye damage such as cataracts, skin burns, dryness, darkening, wrinkles, rapid aging. Long-term, cumulative UV exposure can cause skin cancer.

The higher the UV index, the more dangerous it is for the skin. According to bDoctor Hoang Van Tam, Deputy Head of the Department of Day Inpatient Treatment, National Hospital of Dermatology, UV rays are also known as ultraviolet rays, ultraviolet rays, including A rays (wavelengths from 380 to 315 nm), B rays (wavelength 315-280 nm), C rays (wavelengths shorter than 280 nm).

UV rays have different effects on human health and environment. UVA rays can penetrate clouds and air, causing skin aging. UVB rays have the ability to partially penetrate the ozone layer and atmosphere, causing sunstroke, damage and darkening of the skin. Many people get sunburned primarily from this ray. UVC rays are the highest energy, can cause skin cancer but fortunately have been blocked by the ozone layer.

Doctor Tam recommends that people take proactive measures to protect their bodies from the harmful effects of UV such as limiting sun exposure during peak hours. When going out in the sun, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Going to the beach should choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 50 or higher and apply it every two hours. Combination sun protection tablets can be used to protect the skin.

In addition, protect the skin by physical measures such as wearing hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, masks, gloves, socks, wearing dark clothes, shoes that cover the feet. Drink 2-3 liters of water a day, eat fruits with a lot of water such as watermelon, oranges, grapefruit… Eat a lot of vegetables and tubers to increase the amount of vitamins provided to the skin, increase protection.

Children need special attention to avoid the harmful effects of UV rays. Young skin is inherently immature and vulnerable, while children often play, run and jump outdoors, leading to a higher risk of skin diseases caused by ultraviolet rays than adults.

To take care of the skin in the hot season, according to the doctor, the first thing is to clean the skin daily. The care process helps to brighten the skin, reduce dullness and reduce acne. Use moisturizer to restore skin, not dehydrated. You should choose a moisturizing lotion or serum that absorbs quickly for normal skin and a gel for people with oily skin.

Sunburnt skin, sunburn, apply cold linen to the damaged skin and use cooling products to soothe the skin. If the burn doesn’t improve after a few days of care, see a dermatologist for a checkup.
