The President of Ukraine asked Russia to exchange high-ranking figures for prisoners

“I propose that Russia exchange ‘your people’ for our young men who are being held by Russia. The military and law enforcement must consider this possibility,” Zelensky said in a video statement posted on the morning of April 13.

Mr. Zelensky also warned Russia that Ukraine will arrest more people.

Mr. Zelensky posted a picture of Mr. Medvedchuk, handcuffed in a tired look, with the caption: “A special operation was carried out thanks to the SBU. Good job! Details will be available later.” SBU is the security agency of Ukraine.

Before the conflict broke out, Mr. Medvedchuk was charged with treason and placed under house arrest. It is not clear where the billionaire was during times of conflict.

In 2014, Mr. Medvedchuk was sanctioned by the US for “threatening the peace, security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and undermining Ukraine’s democratic institutions and processes”.

However, the businessman has also acted as an intermediary between Moscow and Kiev during the conflict in the Donbass region thanks to his personal relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with filmmaker Oliver Stone in 2019, Putin admitted that he is the godfather of his daughter Medvedchuk.

“I don’t want to say that we are very close, but we know each other very well,” Putin said.

“He was the chief of staff to former Ukrainian President Lenonid Kuchma, and at that time he asked me to attend his daughter’s christening. In the tradition of Orthodox Christianity, you cannot refuse such an offer,” Putin said in an interview.
