Two Sikh Men Attacked, Ripped In New York City

Two Sikh men were attacked in the Richmond Hill section of Queens on Tuesday in what the New York Police Department is investigating as a hate crime. The attack, carried out by two men, attacked the victims with fists and wooden sticks, taking their money and ripping off their turbines.

Police said the victims suffered minor injuries and one person involved was arrested at the scene.

The attack took place at the same intersection, where Nirmal Singh, 70, was brutally beaten last week. Singh, a Sikh man from India, was taking a walk when suddenly someone punched him in the face causing him to bleed.

American Sikh leaders and civil rights organizations have worked to draw more attention to this type of violence. after the murder of four Sikh workers at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis last April.

Although police determined the Indiana shooting was not a hate crime, Sikh Americans Say They Have Faced “Invisible” Racism for several years. According to FBI data, there is a 68 percent increase in hate crimes against Sikhs between 2019 and 2020, mostly committed by whites.

Nikki Singh said: “This targeted hate violence not only deeply hurts the individuals involved – it hurts the entire community. “We must continue to fight for justice to send the message that violent hatred will not be tolerated.”
