US sanctions Russia’s largest cryptocurrency exchange

According to an announcement by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, part of the US Department of the Treasury, sanctions will be imposed on darknet market Hydra and cryptocurrency exchange Garantex.

The US Treasury Department considers the sanctions to be part of an international effort to “[ngăn chặn] proliferation of malicious cybercrime services, dangerous drugs and other illegal services”. Finance Minister Janet Yellen said hackers use ransomware and other cybercriminals that may be tolerated and operate in Russia, posing a potential threat to U.S. interests.

Regarding Garantex, the US authorities accused the cryptocurrency exchange of “deliberately ignoring” the requirements of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism.

An investigation by US authorities has found that more than $8 million related to ransomware attacks were traded at Hydra, while cryptocurrency exchange Garantex facilitated more than 100 million. USD from transactions “involving illegal organizations and darknet markets.” In addition, the US Treasury Department also pointed out 100 wallet addresses specializing in providing Bitcoin, Tether (USDT) and Ethereum that are linked to Hydra and Garantex.
