“At… Mariupol, near the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, as a result of successful attacks by the Russian armed forces and militia units of the Donetsk People’s Republic, 1,026 Ukrainian soldiers of the 36th Marine Brigade The marines voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in its latest announcement on the situation in Ukraine on April 13.

The ministry added that the 151 wounded Ukrainian soldiers were treated on the spot and then taken to the Mariupol city hospital.

Shortly after this announcement, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said it had no information that a brigade of Ukrainian marines in Mariupol had been reported by Moscow earlier.

“I have no information,” Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, a representative of Ukraine’s defense ministry, told Reuters news agency in response to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, commenting to Sputnik news agency, Russian military expert Igor Korotchenko said: “The proactive surrender of Ukrainian marines shows that resistance has no longer made sense and morale is broken, this can be an example for other Ukrainian servicemen in the pan of fire.”

“This shows that the besieged Ukrainian soldiers realize that further resistance is useless and need to save their lives, and they rush to surrender,” Korotchenko said.
