DNC moves to preliminary overhaul of presidential calendar, puts Iowa’s top position at risk

WASHINGTON – The Democratic National Committee took one step closer on Wednesday to making it happen biggest change to presidential preliminary calendar for years, putting Iowa in danger of losing its traditional first-person status.

The DNC’s robust Rules & Regulations Committee approved a plan that would allow any state that applies to become one of the initial statecurrently includes Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, in that order.

The committee plans to publish the new calendar by July 15, which will then require the approval of the entire DNC.

Nevada has make an aggressive game for the top spot at the start of the 2024 Democratic presidential primaries, when President Joe Biden is expected to compete to be reformed. Meanwhile, other states are hoping to get into one of four or five likely positions soon, securing attention from candidates and the press, millions of dollars in ad spend, and building their base. massive political infrastructure ahead of the general election.

Iowa has long faced criticism from Democrats, who say the Republican Party is too white and too white to play such an important role in the Democratic nomination process. But their 2020 closed-door meeting was blown up, prompting demands for reform more urgent than ever.

The Rules & Regulations Committee gave itself a tight chance to receive applications, review them, and decide on a proposed schedule before the next full DNC meeting this summer.

Countries must declare their interest by May 6 and complete their applications by June 3, with the committee until July 15 to publish its decision. Several public area “listening sessions” will be held during the process.

In examining the different states, the committee paid particular attention to a state’s diversity, political competitiveness, and “viability,” including considering whether the state has the capacity to organize such a popular contest and whether it is a reasonable venue to campaign. .

The need for more racial and ethnic diversity has been a particular protest among Democrats, some of whom noted that when South Carolina and Nevada were added to the original group of states, in their final overhaul, in 2008, they fell behind overwhelmingly the white states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Former DNC Chairwoman Donna Brazile, who was on the Rules & Regulations committee, connected the push to add more diverse states to the main calendar with the larger fight for racial justice.

“There was a moment that we will never forget. And that’s why I wanted to make sure it was included,” Brazile said to applause from other committee members Wednesday. “What we’re seeing now with these Republicans – and yes, I said who they are – what are they trying to do to get us back to pre-1965. I won’t support it. it, and this side shouldn’t either. ”
