Focusing on one thing, being likened to ‘Evil Eye of Sauron’ in The Lord of the Rings

The CEO of Meta – Facebook’s parent company, Mark Zuckerberg, has always had an interesting leadership style. From making an offer to a 17-year-old intern with a salary of $6,000/month to organizing and attending “Faceversaries” – the annual anniversary of employees. Mark is always praised for being an enthusiastic boss.

And the employees in the company have fondly called Mark with a nickname that reflects his strong work intensity.

“Some people who work at the company say – jokingly that my over-attention sometimes resembles Sauron’s evil eye,” Zuckerberg told podcast host Tim Ferriss in an interview in March.

In The Lord of the Rings, The Eye of Sauron is the flaming eye of the villain, always trying to search every nook and cranny to find the Lord of the Rings. In the words of one fan of the series, when Sauron’s eyes choose to focus on a particular subject, “few people can stand its gruesome look”.

Mark explains that when he’s at work, he tends to focus his energy on just one problem and ignore the others. This explains the fact that some of his employees are tired of getting too much attention and as a result they give him this nickname.

Although Zuckerberg insists that the nickname is used by employees as a way of showing affection. However, the executive admitted that full focus on one thing or idea doesn’t always lead to good results.

“You have the constant energy to get on with something. And if you point it out to any group, you’ll burn them.”

Zuckerberg says his goal is to “diffuse” his energy so that it doesn’t focus on any one person or group, but can think about the right things in the right amount of time. However, he has said that it is a very thin line to walk, as ideas are best acted upon in this moment. “Having balance is an important thing for organizational sustainability,” Zuckerberg said.

Also in the interview, Zuckerberg was asked what he often did to relieve stress during the 18 years he ran Facebook. In response, the CEO said he often wakes up early every day to read emails about Meta’s internal information, which includes “a large amount of bad news” that the billionaire has to receive.

“It’s like getting punched in the face,” admits Mark Zuckerberg.

To avoid feeling “attacked”, Mark Zuckerberg chose to surf to forget. This CEO shared that he still has a habit of surfing every morning to release all negative energy, about an hour or more each time, then go back to work.

“In a place surrounded by only water, it’s hard to think about anything else. Standing on the skateboard, you’ll just focus on it,” Mark shared.

After each one, Zuckerberg felt things calm down and filled with energy to tackle the problem. CEO Meta admits that when there is too much negative information, it is true that the ability to handle work that day is also less effective.
