Heartless selling her daughter to China to get money for medical treatment

On April 14, the People’s Court of Nghe An province opened a first-instance trial for Lo Pho Pheng (born in 1975, residing in Bao Nam commune, Ky Son). Along with two accomplices including Lo Thi Cam (SN 1987, in Huu Kiem commune, Ky Son district), Moong Thi Xum (SN 1976, in Huu Kiem commune) for the crime of “trafficking in people under 16 years old”. The victim in the case is the biological daughter of the defendant Pheng (at the time of being sold, she was just over 13 years old).
According to the indictment of the People’s Procuracy of Nghe An province, around November 2018, Lo Pho Pheng, because he needed money for his medical treatment, met Lo Thi Cam to find someone to bring his biological daughter LTMC to China to sell.
Cam met with Moong Thi Xum to discuss how to bring the baby to sell. Then, Xom and a man named Hong (unknown identity, address) took the victim to China to sell to a Chinese man to buy as a wife for 50,000 yuan (NDT), equivalent to 150 million dong.
Hong took 10,000 yuan and gave Xom 40,000 yuan (equivalent to 120 million dong). This amount Xum gave Pheng 100 million VND, gave Cam 13 million and kept his share 7 million VND.
In October 2021, after escaping to Vietnam, the victim filed a denunciation of Moong Thi Xum’s crime to the Investigation Police Agency, Ky Son District Police, Nghe An.

At the trial, the defendants sincerely confessed their crimes. The defendants all said that they did not know that sending people to China to get married was against the law. The victim’s family also did not ask for compensation and reduced the punishment for the accused.
After comprehensive review of the case, the trial panel sentenced defendant Lo Pho Pheng to 14 years in prison, Moong Thi Xum to 13 years in prison and Lo Thi Cam to 12 years in prison for the crime of “trafficking in people under the age of 16”.
