January 6 rioter says he wants Trump’s ‘approval’ to be found guilty by jury

WASHINGTON – A Donald Trump supporter told jurors that he “obey the orders of the president“As he stormed the US Capitol on January 6, he was found guilty on Thursday after he admitted he had stolen a coat rack and a bottle of wine from the building.

Dustin Thompson, a 38-year-old Ohio man, testified during the trial that he was caught up in online conspiracy theories when he was fired at the start of the Covid pandemic and said he was looking for earn Trump’s “respect” and “Approval” on January 6.

Thompson’s attorney argued that “Donald Trump encourage people like Dustin Thompson to storm the Capitol“and take advantage of “vulnerable” individuals as his clients. A Justice Department prosecutor told jurors at the conclusion of the debate that the former president not triedand that they should not consider Trump’s actions even if they think he is responsible for what happened on January 6.

Thompson face six charges, including obstruction of formal proceedings and theft of government property. He is one of nearly 800 defendants who have been charged in connection with the attack on the US Capitol.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton ordered Thompson’s detention until sentencing, although the government did not ask him to do so. Walton said he believed Thompson lied on the stand, and showed he was “weak” and could not be trusted.

After the ruling, the judge continued to criticize Trump.

“I think our democracy is in trouble because unfortunately we have charlatans like our former president who in my opinion don’t really care about democracy but only care about democracy. to power,” said Walton.

Thompson was the third participant on January 6 to be found guilty by a jury. Guy Reffitt, Texas, and Thomas Robertson, Virginia, were both convicted of all charges during the trial. Nearly 800 people have been charged in connection with the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, and more than 250 have pleaded guilty. Hundreds of additional rioters on January 6 have been identified for the FBI but have yet to be arrested.
