Russia embargoes nearly 500 US and Canadian congressmen

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the new embargo was a response measure US embargo and all US congressmen on the sanctions list will be banned from traveling to Russia, according to Reuters.

Moscow made such a move after Washington on March 24 imposed an embargo on 328 members of the State Duma (lower house) of Russia because military campaign in Ukraine. The State Duma has a total of 450 MPs. Under Washington’s embargo, the US assets of 328 Russian parliamentarians are frozen and they are prohibited from having any dealings with US citizens.

In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry on April 13 announced that 87 of the 90 Canadian senators are currently on a “black list” for foreigners banned from entering Russia, according to CTV News. Earlier on February 24, the day Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine, the Canadian government announced the addition of 351 members of the State Duma to the list of sanctions.

Since Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, the United States, Canada, the European Union and a number of other countries have imposed many sanctions targeting the leadership, many individuals and organizations Russia, including President Vladimir Putin and the leader’s two daughters.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on April 13 that the United States had many additional sanctions that could be imposed on Russia because of the military operation in Ukraine, according to Reuters. Ms. Psaki said financial institutions are the target of further measures that are likely to be imposed.
